Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg were studying abroad when they met for the first time. The two shared similar journalistic backgrounds and a passion for storytelling. They immediately clicked.

When they went back to NYC, they interned for NBC. A dream come true! Quickly, they got promoted to full time positions.

As days went by, though, their dream got a reality check. At 25 and 26, the two started realizing that they did not want to wait 10 years for a better position… that might open. Thanks, but no thanks.

Around the same time, they noticed that their busy friends naturally came to them for news updates. They simply didn’t have time to stay up-to-date. At that moment, it all clicked, as Carly and Danielle felt an actual need for quick news.

In 2012, they quit their jobs and launched TheSkimm, a newsletter that summarizes world news every morning.

But that was just the beginning. As the two tried to raise funds, they got rejected by investors, who simply couldn’t see the value in a newsletter. A tough hit, but the two did not give up. They lived off of their credit cards and continued writing. Their subscribers increased every day as more readers saw value in the emails.

Twelve months later, TheSkimm reached 100k subscribers! This time, investors listened, and the two were able to raise some funds. More money followed, and the rest is history. Today, TheSkimm is a thriving business with 450+ employees and over 5 million subscribers worldwide.

THE ACTUAL EXPERT

When it comes to a niche or anything specific, if you’ve done your homework right, then chances are you are the actual expert. Not your friend, neighbor, coach or even investor. If you bring value and see promising results, then keep doing what you believe in, and repeat until the whole world listens.
